Chapter Ten
A meeting with an unfamiliar shifter and Aimee wasn’t what Anais wanted to wake up to, but the sound of silverware and slamming cupboards had stirred her. For a while, she’d thought about staying in Orion’s room. There, his scent could comfort her, but she couldn’t hide forever.
If she wanted to stay with him and attempt to make something work, then she needed to make amends with Aimee and get to know the others that he called his family. The thought struck her, a decision that she’d unconsciously made, but didn’t regret.
Now, Aimee stood on the other side of a counter, staring her down.
“I’m sorry for the person I was to you,” Anais offered. She didn’t expect Aimee to accept it. Anais knew she didn’t deserve such an easy road to forgiveness. “I’m working on changing.”
Aimee’s nostrils flared. She looked between Orion and Anais. Whatever Aimee saw, it pleased her because she nodded. It made Anais turn to Orion. He beamed at her. The expression cut her to her core. For a second, she almost believed that changed shifters could have mates.
She shut down the thought before hope could render wounds that she wouldn’t be able to heal later. They were not mates, but she could work on a relationship, just like anyone else.
“Alright. Let’s eat before everything gets cold.” Aimee returned to the table with spoons. “Can’t let a shifter go hungry.”
Anais hesitated. The food smelled delicious, but her stomach turned. After the earlier interaction with the loan shark’s men, she was going to be in trouble. Her brother was going to suffer for their actions. Orion had only been trying to protect her, but that meant her brother would hurt. She needed to find her phone. She needed to know what had been done to him in her stead.
It wasn’t on the nightstand where she’d left it. Her stomach dropped. She was lost, fear running rampant through her mind. She fisted her hair in her hands and tugged, trying to get control of herself. Her beast was not worried. It was content with Orion. If the beast had any say, it would have left her brother to the wolves.
“Are you looking for this?” Orion appeared beside her. In his hand was her phone.
At first, relief washed over her. Then she saw the guilt drawing down Orion’s face. It made her hesitate. His fingers curled around it, briefly before he placed it in her open palm. He said nothing more about it, but she would question him later. When all visitors were gone.
“You certainly have left your touch on the place,” Aimee mentioned to Anais.
The comment was offhanded, but the way she cast a sidelong glance in Anais’s direction filled it with meaning. Anais looked around herself. She’d brought nothing with her. Everything on the walls and shelves belonged to Orion.
Aimee set a plate of tortillas loaded with sauced meat and pickled cabbage in front of her. The sour smell tickled Anais’s nose and made her stomach roll.
